Tuition benefit for emergency license teachers:

Students who start their online Master’s in Education are eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship.** Upon completion of the degree program, graduates may be eligible to earn a certificate in Teacher Leadership, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, or Social Emotional Learning at no additional cost.* Degree and certificate programs must be completed by September 2024 to be eligible.

EMERGENCY LICENSE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • a. A Provisional license is granted by DESE to individuals holding a Bachelor’s degree and who have passed MTELs.. Provisional license is valid for 5 years and is not renewable.
  • b. Emergency licenses were created as a temporary license in response to the Covid Pandemic to keep new teachers entering into the profession and into the Commonwealth’s school systems. Emergency license holders have a Bachelor’s degree, but have not passed the MTELs. The emergency license will expire June 30, 2023 and teachers who have an emergency license will need to complete educational program requirements for an initial license or add-on license, depending on their current credentials and area of teaching.
  • a. You can use your current teaching hours for 2 pre-practicums (15 hours each), but would still need to complete your 300 hour practicum per DESE requirements
  • a. The cost of the full M.Ed program is $20,016 (36 credits, $556/credit hour)
    • i. Emergency License Teachers receive the following financial assistance:
      1. $500 off first course if enrolled by October, 2022
      2. 10% off tuition if your school system is a partner of Merrimack College
        • a. Total Program Cost $18,014 (savings of $2,001)
      3. Option of enrolling in a choice of three Leadership Certificates (Teacher Leader, DEI or Social Emotional Learning, each 16 credits) at no additional cost after completing the initial license or add-on license. The free certificate must be completed by September 2024. The value of the certificate is $11,328 ($708 per credit).
  • a. No, the offer has been created for emergency license teachers who still need to enroll in a program to continue teaching.
  • a. Yes, you will be assigned a success coach who will help you navigate through the program from start to finish.
  • a. Program is 100% online, allowing you to continue in your current role while accessing coursework at your own pace
  • b. Merrimack’s success coaches will be by your side throughout the entire program
  • c. Merrimack’s M.Ed program is a cost effective and highly rated program for Massachusetts teachers
  • a. You can become a valuable leader in your school and in your district, which may lead to opportunities such as: department head, PLC leader, district administrator
  • b. Your salary will be increased for every 15 credits you receive post Masters degree. The amount of salary increase is dependent on the salary guidelines set forth by your school and district.
  • In order to be eligible for the free leadership certificate, you need to first complete the M.Ed. or Add-On license.
